Chloe Callow obtained a 1st class BSc degree plus honors in Biological Sciences and an MSc by research in Biomolecular Science at the University of East Anglia (Norwich, UK). In her undergraduate degree, she undertook a competitively funded summer research project, her final year project and Master’s project in Dr. Gary Rowley’s lab which investigated two component stress response mechanisms, nitric oxide and heavy metal resistance in Salmonella Typhimurium. Chloe is currently a PhD candidate in the Food and Microbial Sciences Unit at the University of Reading, UK. Her research focuses on the gut microbiota of weaning piglets and the interaction of gut bacteria via metabolite production and its effects on host immunity.

Her report will discuss her experiences during both undergraduate and postgraduate degrees in the UK. She will take a journey through her research and the skills she has learned along the way.

The gut microbiota is important as it can have positive and negative health impacts on its host. There has been links to epithelial barrier function, metabolite, and immune mediated mechanisms. Micronutrients, such as iron, require strict homeostasis for bodily functions, any excess iron in the gastrointestinal tract can thereby interact and influence gut microbial composition and their metabolism. Piglets are susceptible to iron-deficiency anaemia without iron supplementation, so it is included in husbandry practices. Post-weaning diarrhoea (PWD), a state of gut dysbiosis, is the number one welfare and economic issue within pork farming. Previous strategies such as antibiotics and zinc oxide are heavily restricted in the EU, but there are no definitive replacements yet, risking future farming practices. Her PhD focuses on finding alternative solutions or preventatives for PWD. Our hypothesis is that lowering iron in weaner feed could promote beneficial gut microbiota development, in turn having positive outcomes on metabolite production and immune development. She will share preliminary data from her PhD project so far and how she plan to explore this further.
